Institute for Sustainable Development

Background

The ISD was set up on November 25, 1998 on the basis of the Centre of Ecological and Humanitarian Research and Education, the Chair of Applied Mathematics as well as the Chair of Ecology and Lifesciences. It was the first ever attempt to create a complex of social, humanitarian, economic and natural sciences subdivisions in a higher educational establishment of technical profile. Basic goals and aims

The major targets and tasks set forward before the Institute are as follows: training of specialists competent at the strategy and technology of the society’s sustainable development; training of specialists capable of inventing innovative ideas in the fields of applied mathematics, social work, public relations (PR), environmental protection, etc; carrying out research work to enable the sociocultural and economic potential development of the country and the region; the development of scientific grounding for academic process running; training of highly qualified lecturers through postgraduate courses as well as doctoral ones; providing humanitarian education of students at each university division.

Scientific Research work

The Institute can boast its most significant results obtained by:

• making research of the world’s global and regional problems;
• a new approach to the problem of sustainable development based on the principle of humanism and ecological ethics;
• elaborating philosophical grounding of the new ecology and humane civilization;
• the analysis of ecological and sociocultural problems of Lake Baikal protection;
• defining the prospects for sustainable development in the Baikal region;
• conducting research of Buryatia’s history and culture within civilization context;
• conducting research of sociocultural foundations and prospects for modern civilized society development;
• grounding of Baikal region’s strategic significance being UNESCO’s world heritage area;
• active cooperation with the specialized UN institutions dealing with the problems of Lake Baikal protection and Baikal region’s sustainable development.

The ESSUTM ISD scientific works announce Baikal region’s role as Russia’s basic region and the “spot of growth’ for a new civilizatioin. These ideas were made public at International and all-Russia conferences organized by the Government of RF, Federalnoye Sobraniey of RF, specialized UN institutions.

Ecology and the Humanities Faculty

The ISD was formed on the basis of the Centre for the ecology-and-humanities studies and humanitarian education in November 1998. The Ecology and Humanities Department is one of ISD’s divisions.

The main targets and tasks facing the staff are as follows: to intellectualize the educational process content, inculculate new training techniques, facilitate the conditions for students’ creative activity so that the young specialists would be adjusted to the market economy conditions, to successfully fulfil their job uner the conditiongs of tough competition on the labout market.

The necessity of updating the academic process within the Department is driven by the transition to the new system of higher education. Russia’s government announced the policy of transition to Bologna system to join the European educational continuum as its constituent part.

The Department set forward the tasks as follows: training of specialists on the issues of social politics, international relations, global political, economic, ecological problems; bringing the latest achievements of modern science and the analysis techniques within the reach of students (as well as embarking students on international relations studies through elaboration of academic programs in cooperation with Russia’s leading universities).
